THE CAPUCHIN SOUP KITCHEN

Today the soup kitchen serves nearly two thousand meals a day.  The Capuchin organization also offers several other programs to help the many people in need in our area.  Through their Earthworks Urban Farm program they provide the kitchen with fresh fruits, vegetables, and honey for meals. Growing much of their own produce increases the amount of meals they can serve.  The surplus of the harvest also allows them to be able to bring some of their vegetables and seedlings to market.  In doing so they can provide low cost, quality vegetables to the community.  The farming program is made up of mainly volunteers who are seeking to connect with their environment and help the local community.

Another program of the Capuchins’ is their bakery, On the Rise Bakery.  Men who desire to truly change their lives after they have completed a substance abuse treatment program or have been released from prison run this program.  Every purchase of baked goods from this program helps to provide, supportive housing, training, counseling and educational opportunities to its members.  Through their works, the program creates a sense of worth in their community, while also helping others.

The Capuchin Soup Kitchen could not provide all of these services without the help of its volunteers.  These people are the blood of the organization.  Through their generous donations of service and fund raising the organization has been able to thrive.  A few of the largest benefit fund raising events are the Benefit on the Bay.  This event is usually held in the summer at Mac & Ray’s Marina on Lake St. Clair.  The last couple of years it has been a sellout.  Another special event is the annual SOCK Dinner.  This event just celebrated its 41st year at the Renaissance Center in Detroit on October 11th.  The event was a fun filled night including a dinner, dancing and great entertainment.  It has been listed as one of Detroit’s top grossing fund-raisers.

The Brothers of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen have devoted their lives to providing the basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, and as sense of self worth to the people in its community.  If you would like more information on the Capuchin Soup Kitchen or to donate please log on to:
